FET8604- "Pedagogical Event"

Two weeks ago, I know nothing about the new tools used in supporting online learning. Most of my peers have started their pedagogical events. I kept long time in thinking about a topic for my event. At last, I decided to talk about tools that I have found them useful and used them during this course. These tools are:
- Blogs
- Google Docs
- Slideshare
- Evernote

My event will begin on Tuesday 13/5 till Fri 16/5. I will create my event in a blog to make it easier for participants to add their comments there.

FET8604- Theme 5: Tools to Support Online Pedagogy

We are approaching week 10 in this course. Unfortunately, my group hasn't started yet in the collaborative activity and some member in other groups have already started with their pedagogical events.
Bee is the first one who started running her pedagogical event and I was really impressed by her topic. Her topic was about Voicethread platform. I didn't about it before. It seems that I am too poor in updating my knowledge regarding the recent tools in Technology. Because of Bee's presentation, I have to search for new modern tools that can be used to support the online pedagogy. I will start my search for these tools and discuss it with my group. I really hope that I could learn about new tools. That will be like finding a treasure.

FET5601- Evaluation Activity

It's week 9 since the course has started. We are approaching now the last module in this course which is about ( Evaluation of Flexible Programs). I found one of the reading materials provided in this module (Evaluating open learning (Rowntree, 1992) is really helpful to understand the process of evaluation. However, I felt the reading was not enough for me because I wanted to know more about Formative and Summative Evaluation. I found some good articles that helped me a lot to start in my evaluation activity in the web discussion. I have listed the articles I found within a new post in my group forum to share with my team.

I have to say that before starting reading and searching for more articles, I didn't know what's formative and summative evaluation. I always come across these two types of evaluation but I wasn't able to understand them clearly till I started reading about them with the intention to use them in my evaluation activity.

FET5601- Analysis Process (Learners)

The article "Instructional System Design" - Analysis Phase by Donald Clark is a rich article that has detailed process about the analysis process.
Also, another useful resources that helped me a lot to understand what do we need when we analyze learners needs is a book 'Principles of Instructional Design" By Gagne et al. (2005)

Gagne et al indicated that some consideration should be taken in account in analysis process, e.g. What learners are like, what factors influence learning, and how to design instruction for individual differences. As we all know, that learners possess certain qualities. We will find excellent, good, and bad motivated learners in each class. Therefore, it's essential to design the course according to the analysis of different characteristics or learners. An important question should be asked when it comes to design instruction for learner differences which is "How to design instruction for individual differences and what factors influence learning? According to the American Psychological Association (APA), they produced 14 psychological characteristics and principles that are divided into four factors: cognitive and metacognitive, motivational and affective, developmental and social, and individual differences.
These various factors and principles help define internal qualities of learners that are of concern to instructional designers because they affect the entire information processing chain of learning and students' motivation to learn. Therefore, it's very important in the analysis process to takes these factors and principles in consideration to be able to design a successful course that will meet the needs of the different characteristics or learners. It's because we design for different learners but not one type of students.
So, how are you going to do the analysis process of your course learners? I really hope that you will join me in this discussion so we could exchange knowledge and experience with each other in regard of analysis process.
I will post another post regarding the analysis of task and context. But for meanwhile, let me stop here and waiting your comments.

Laila

FET8604- "Learner- Centeredness"

Let me here share you my own thoughts about "learner-centered" from my experience as online learner and face to face learner. When I was f2f learner, the instructor or teacher use to be the center of class "Instructor- centered" because he/ she is the one who dominates the class. Learners do not play a big role in classes as the instructor do the whole job. However, when I started learning online, I have noticed the difference myself. I realized the importance of my role as a learner. I appreciated the value of online learning because I was able to seek after knowledge in a different way and without any limitation. I am able to interact with my peers, my instructors, and course content. I am able to share my thoughts and experience without any limitation as I used to have in f2f classes due to the little time we have sometimes for the interaction.
In online learning, we become "Learner- Centeredness" because we have different unlimited roles. That's how can I describe this term in my point of view as f2f and online learner.
Looking to read others comments regarding this term.

FET8604- digital natives, digital immigrants ( Prensky, 2001)

One of the best enjoyable articles that I read through this semester is Prensky article, "digital natives, digital immigrants". below is my reply to the discussion regarding this article.
===============
I enjoyed reading Prensky's articles which really struck the chord on me. It's true that learners of this generation find it too difficult to learn from books as we used to do that in our schools and university. I still remember when I was in university I get bored of just sitting in and listening to the lecturer. Most of the time I feel sleepy and not able to focus. However, when some of our instructors try to change the routine by showing us the Movie of the story we are learning about, I pay much attention because I enjoy watching the movie besides understanding the story more than I read it only.
What I am intending to say that when teachers try to use some different methods of technology in class, it helps students a lot to understand the lesson. Prensky has discuss that the new generation are much interested with the video games, computer games, etc and it's the teachers roles to cope with us by trying to use the technology within their teaching by calling them digital immigrant.
I don't know which term shall I call myself with but I was much interested with technology since its beginning. Till now, many teachers and instructors don't like to use the technology within their teaching. For example, the blended learning is much used now in most of the universities around the world because using the online web discussions is an effective way to enhance face to face teaching. However, some teachers are still using the same old technology which is the overhead projector to show some points of the lesson. This kind of teachers do not like changing the methods of teaching although they should be native immigrants.
How about the rest? Have you ever thought about using the blended learning module in your courses? What about the other teachers surrounding you? Do they like to change their teaching method or not?
It will be lovely to have more discussion about this topic because I enjoyed reading this article a lot and it's more great to discuss it here.

Laila

FET8604- Education and the Internet

Education is a powerful tool on the global educational environment and the Internet has enabled a new era in human collective activity.

I am a fan of the internet since the first time I used it because I found it helpful in gathering information I used it mostly for looking for good friends who can share me the same interests in some electronic forums, for tourism, general information and for my study too. However, I valued the Internet benefit mostly as a powerful tool when I heard that I could learn through the internet in the best universities while I am at home. The internet is like a huge library for me. I could write one key word where I can get thousands of links for my search. The education by using internet is unlimited as it's the case in traditional learning where we have to stick with one book.

The power of internet is that learners can share their knowledge freely in their blogs, wikies, educational websites. In other words, the Internet has provided us with different options where we can share our knowledge with others.
